POSITION: Team Teaching Position for Classroom Teacher for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Day Students with Moderate to Severe Developmental Disabilities
TIME BASE: Full time
LOCATION: CA School for the Deaf in Fremont
SALARY: $3252 – 5562 plus $100 for bilingual pay and $700 for Recruitment and Retention monthly $48,624 - $76, 433 annually

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION: The California School for the Deaf has a full time team teaching position available for a newly developed classroom for Deaf and hard of hearing day students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. Two teachers, one with credentials to teach moderate to severely handicapped pupils and one with credentials to work with deaf and hard of hearing pupils will work together as a team to teach a maximum of six deaf or hard of hearing students with autism and moderate to severe cognitive deficits. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for involvement in a newly established program in a highly professional and supportive teaching milieu. The California School for the Deaf has a full time team teaching position available for a Special Needs Classroom Teacher for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Day Students with Moderate to Severe Developmental Disabilities.

DUTIES: This teacher is responsible for curriculum development, preparing semester plans, daily lesson plans, instruction and for creating a stimulating classroom environment. Teachers participate in the Individual Education/Individual Transition Plan process and integrate IEP/ITP activities into their lessons. The teacher develops and utilizes a variety of assessment strategies and activities that evaluate students’ progress in relation to the Alternate Curriculum and then prepare reports of student learning progress. Consistent with the IEP, this teacher provides each student with the opportunity to participate in school wide and other curricular and extra-curricular activities as well as appropriate functional, independent living skills, vocational and community experiences. Positive relations with parents, students, and professional colleagues, continuous professional development, and a spirit of collegiality and teamwork are expected. Teachers also participate in extra-curricular programs.

QUALIFICATIONS: 1) Possession of, or eligibility for, a California Standard Teacher
Credential authorizing the holder to teach deaf and hard of hearing students; 2) Proficiency in American Sign Language; 3) Experience in educating and providing interventions for autistic and mentally retarded children, including, but not limited to, experience with the use of picture exchange communication systems (PECS), positive behavioral interventions, applied behavioral analysis (ABA) and/or discrete trial training, and sensory diets.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Highly motivated to start a new high school program for mentally retarded and autistic children working with a small classroom size not to exceed six students in a team teaching environment.
