Story Two
leading journals recently published separate, rave reviews for Orchid
of the Bayou: A Deaf Woman Faces Blindness, Catherine (Kitty) Hoffpauir Fischer’s
story written by her with Cathryn Carroll, author of Clerc:

Quarterly praises Orchid
of the Bayou in its Spring 2001 issue as a
“marvelous account” and the August 2001 issue of Silent News
celebrates Kitty as “a buoyant personality, here for anyone who

her college years at Gallaudet University, she learned that she had Usher
syndrome, a genetic
condition that causes both deafness and blindness. Undaunted, Kitty turned the

has led since she left her home in the Louisiana bayou. Read
