A Reference Tool for the Language Not Spoken

Gallaudet’s Dictionary Receives Stellar Review

The Gallaudet Dictionary of American Sign Language is the most complete sign language dictionary on the market today,” declared the American Reference Books Annual (ARBA) in a recent review. The reviewer goes on to say, “Because sign language cannot easily be learned through the use of a book alone, this volume also comes with a CD-ROM that provides American Sign Language (ASL) signers demonstrating each of the 3,000 signs. The CD-ROM is fully searchable and allows users to quickly view a sign and go directly to its synonyms. This feature makes this book ideal for reference use, instructors, students, and those just learning the language. This volume will become the standard in sign language reference sources and should be made available in public, college and university, and many school libraries.” Read the full review here. The Midwest Book Review recently praised author Jean Ann’s study of Taiwan Sign Language (TSL). “Written by Jean Ann, Frequency of Occurrence and Ease of Articulation of Sign Language Handshapes: The Taiwanese Example is a contribution to sign language linguistics research that particularly examines Taiwanese Sign Language in its search to discover whether the use of specific sign language handshapes increases in direct relation to the ease of their physical formation. Chapters discuss the anatomy and physiology of the human hand, followed by a basic model of ease of handshape articulation, and go on to compare ease of frequency at length. A scholarly, in-depth study and a welcome addition to linguistics reference shelves, particularly those concerning sign language.” Read chapter 2, “The Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Hand,” and order Frequency of Occurrence and Ease of Articulation of Sign Language Handshapes.

The Deaf Experience: Classics in Language and Education, the fifth volume in the Gallaudet Classics in Deaf Studies series, was acclaimed by the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education: “This book is a must for those who want direct access to translated works of the very persons who shaped the modern deaf education and community. Without these persons, deaf education as we know of it today would not be the same....This collection of writings is priceless in terms of our understanding of the roots of modern Deaf Education and sign language politics.” The full review is available online.

In The Deaf Experience, renowned scholar Harlan Lane presents essays from Pierrre Desloges, who penned the first book ever to be published by a deaf man; prominent deaf leaders Saboureux de Fontenay and Jean Massieu; and other members of the nascent French Deaf community during the Enlightenment, a rich period of education for deaf people. Read chapter 2, “Pierre Desloges,” and order The Deaf Experience.
