Mieke Van Herreweghe’s (Belgium) chapter lays out some of her findings regarding turn-taking and turn-yielding in meetings with Deaf and hearing participants. She then explains how to construct role-plays so that students can experience managing the intercultural process of turns with the least amount of interference in this subtle process.
Anna-Lena Nilsson (Sweden) examines “false friends” or a language match that occurs between a spoken language and a signed language and suggests exercises to create the kind of linguistic awareness in students that will help them avoid interpretation on a word-by-word level.
Robert Lee (United States) demonstrates how to take an abstract model of the interpreting process (such as Cokely’s model) and provide students with concrete examples of the stages of the model. These exercises include introducing the concept of monitoring as part of the interpreting process thus providing a way for students to be in control of their own work.
Kyra Pollitt and Claire Haddon (Great Britain), noting that telephone interpreting is one of the most challenging and frustrating tasks interpreters perform, provide readings in discourse and create exercises designed to make the unspoken rules and protocols of phone conversations explicit. Their recommendations for training encourage educators and participants to develop an informed approach that allows for adaptation and consultation in telephone exchanges.
