Through interviews with families with at least one deaf family member who are bilingual in American Sign Language and English, Gallaudet University professors Bodner-Johnson (emeritus, education) and Benedict (communication studies) offer new insights on the developmental and educational needs of deaf children, their exposure to early bilingual signed and spoken language, and parental choices regarding the use of spoken language. Based on the theoretical framework of the person-in-the-environment, they conclude that bilingual family support is crucial to a childís development and relationships.
