Signing for Reading Success
Jan C. Hafer and
“Signing is easy to learn for students and adults alike. Ease of learning is an advantage teachers point to. Teachers who participate in signing and reading research did not have to attend special classes in order to learn signing. Teachers say they enjoy teaching reading through signing because it works; success is motivating.” —Connect
Research and experience have shown that signing helps many students learn to read. The Signing for Reading Success booklet explains this concept, why it works, who it works for, and how to implement it in a classroom. The booklet provides summaries of four research studies on the usefulness of signing for reading achievement. It also suggests a methodology for a single-subject research study that teachers can conduct to validate for themselves the findings presented. Jan C. Hafer is a former professor in the Department of Education at Gallaudet University. Robert M. Wilson was Professor Emeritus of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park.
