Open Access Policy

Gallaudet University Press Policy on Posting Published Materials on Open-Access Internet Sites

Gallaudet University Press recognizes that authors own the rights to intellectual content that they have created and may disseminate their work in manuscript form without attribution at their discretion.

Authors who wish to disseminate their work as published by Gallaudet University Press must obtain permission from the Press. Should authors desire to post electronic versions of their work that originally appeared in a Gallaudet University Press publication, the following stipulations shall apply:

  1. Before any agreement between GU Press and the authors can be completed, the authors must disclose whether they are bound by regulations of an institution or granting agency with which they are affiliated to make all published words available on an open-access internet site.

  2. If authors ask GU Press to honor a nonbinding request by any institution or granting agency with which they are affiliated to make a published work available on an open-access internet site, the following credit notice shall appear on the first page of the work.

    For book chapters:
    Reprinted [or Posted] by permission of the publisher from [title of the book in which the author’s work appears] by [author’s/editor’s name] (Washington, DC: Gallaudet University Press, [year of publication]): 000–00]. Copyright [year of publication] by Gallaudet University; http://gupress.gallaudet.edu

    For articles from the American Annals of the Deaf:
    Reprinted [or Posted] by permission of the publisher from [Author’s name], [“Title of Article”], American Annals of the Deaf [volume, issue (year): 000–00. Copyright [year] by CEASD.
    For articles from Sign Language Studies:
    Reprinted [or Posted] by permission of the publisher from [Author’s name], [“Title of Article”], Sign Language Studies [volume, issue (year): 000–00. Copyright [year] by Gallaudet University.

  3. Articles and book chapters are embargoed and cannot be posted on Academic.edu or similar websites for one year; authors cannot post PDFs taken from Project Muse and they cannot use the Project Muse logo.
